The Bellringers

This is an ancient art with a long
tradition in Britain and one not much practised elsewhere. Scientific
"change-ringing" was introduced in the 17th century and had a great revival in
the 19th century. Ringing by hand is carried out by a means of a rope
attached to the bell which either moves it as it hangs mouth downwards
("chiming") or swings it round nearly full circle ("ringing"). In
change-ringing, the bells are rung in varying order by a team. The skill
and effort involved being considerable. Here are the bell-ringers at
Alfriston in Sussex.
